Why the rules changed
Home batteries are increasingly installed alongside solar panels, but they are also used without solar to store off-peak electricity. These systems introduce energy storage, power conversion equipment and the possibility of electricity flowing in more than one direction.
What a safe design considers
- Battery location and protection from damage
- Ventilation and environmental conditions
- Manufacturer requirements and equipment compatibility
- Fire-risk mitigation and safe access
- Isolation and emergency shutdown arrangements
- Whether protective devices are suitable for two-way energy flow
- Operating modes during a grid failure
Questions to ask an installer
Ask why a particular battery and location have been selected, what happens during a power cut, how the system is isolated and what maintenance or monitoring is expected. You should receive clear operating information and certification for the electrical work.
Battery capacity should be based on household consumption, generation and the intended operating strategy—not simply the largest unit that will fit.
